Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was recently in the hospital and, after test, diagnosed with ischaemic colitis. After six weeks, I still have not regained my strength and energy. Any suggestions? I am 75 and do a lot of volunteer work which I just cannot do right now. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for your question. Please rate my answer if you are satisfied. Ischaemic Colitis means that some portion of your gut is dead. The treatment depends on the cause, duration and extent of area involved in your IC. The usual cause of IC is inflammation or blockage of arteries supplying blood to that portion of your intestine. The doctors assess all these things and treat you accordingly. They usually give antibiotics, anti inflammatory medication and pain killers along with diet modification. In some cases where the cause is blockage of arteries they also give medications that prevent blood clotting. If the area of ischaemia is larger or none of the treatment works then the only option that remains is gut surgery which usually improves the gut function significantly but has its own risks. In your case, if your problem is only that you're not gaining strength and energy (and you don't have the disabling IC symptoms) I would suggest you to see a nutritionist to adjust/improve your diet tailored specifically for your condition.
